Camphor is a harmful ingredient in Vicks Vaporub only if ingested. The manufacturers warn that VapoRub should not be used on children under age 2 nor applied in or near the nostrils.

HOWEVER, the articles and journals about the harmful uses of camphor are giving Big Pharma choreographed campaigns. Created in 1905, Vicks Vaporub is a tried and true household staple that has been careful about how much camphor it uses and displays how it should be used.

I was definitely that child who loved my Vicks applications and especially slathered it under my nose! 😂 I remember my mom rubbing it on my chest during a cold.

Camphor is also a natural remedy for countless skin and pain issues, but it is not for children.

Camphor oil should be a staple in your household and I explain why later in this post. Even the reviews on Amazon will tell you that camphor oil is an OG healer and ailment remedy.

Doesn’t it seem odd to attack the product for such a natural ingredient? Why not push back on the petroleum used instead? Vicks VapoRub is also made by Procter and Gamble (P&G) who are notorious for not being cruelty-free.

Soooo of course we need better options without petroleum, made for children with clean ingredients and I got you. There are many amazing brands for chest rubs now, but I’m sharing my top picks.

ALTERNATIVES

Hyland’s Chest Rub is currently in my bathroom now. It smells so freaking good and I love rubbing it on me or my kids when they have a cold.

If you need some immunity boosters you can trust, I share vitamins and supplements, vegan gummies, greens, and superfood lattes that are all cruelty-free.

Back to the camphor oil details…

Camphor oil is plant-based—the essential oil extracted from the camphor tree. It is safe if used correctly, not ingested, or on an open wound. It is antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory.

Spirit of Camphor is 10% camphor in an alcohol base. It acts as an insect repellent with antimicrobial, antiviral, anticancer, antifungal, and antitussive (prevent or relieve cough) effects.

Achievable uses: muscle pain and stiffness, joint pain, insect bites and stings, bruises, sprains, rashes, eczema, dry and itchy skin, acne, boils, poison ivy, skin tags, warts, lice, canker sores, cold sores, fever blisters, dermatofibroma from mosquito bites, nail fungus, sinus congestion, and many more!

I get excited by watching women bloom. Women believing in themselves, loving themselves and others. Women fighting for their beliefs and for others without a voice. Everything you need to bloom was given to you when you were created. My hope is to help water and nurture what’s already inside you.
